Michael Jackson-Death by Drug Interaction?
My mentor, Dr. Estelle Toby Goldstein, the Renegade Doctor, wrote an incredible blog about Michael Jackson and investigating what may have caused Michael's passing.

Music can Help Restore Stroke Patients' Sight
More good news and evidence concerning the healing power of music!

From HealthDay News -- Music may have charms to help restore sight to those recovering from a stroke, a new study finds.  Stroke survivors can suffer impaired visual awareness called visual neglect. It's caused by stroke-related damage in brain areas that integrate vision, attention and action, researchers said.

Patients with visual neglect lost awareness of objects in the opposite side of space compared to the site of brain injury.  For example, in an extreme case, patients may only eat the food on their right side of the plate.

The study included three stroke surviviors who'd lost awareness of half of their field of vision.  They completed vision tasks in three settings:  listening to their preferred music; listening to music they didn't like; and in silence. Music appears to improve awareness because of its positive emotional effect on the patient, so similar beneficial effects may also be gained by making the patient happy in other ways.

All the patients were better able to identify colored shapes and red lights in their depleted side of vision when they listened to music they liked, compared with music they didn't like or silence.

According to the researchers, this suggests that positive emotions triggered by listening to pleasant music may result in more efficient signaling in the brian. In turn, this may improve the patient's awareness by giving the brain more resources to process stimuli.

Of Cows and Power Lines
This article shows the adaptability of animals, and animals have a built-in GPS system which power lines and other magnetic fields affect.

From IEEE Spectrum -- A team of researchers from Germany and the Czech Repuplic has discovered that, all factors being equal, cattle and two species of deer tend to align themselves along a north-south axis using some innate magnetic sense and that this preferred alignment is disturbed when they graze under high-voltage power lines. When the cattle were at least 150 meters away from power lines, the researchers detected a significant alignment among the animals along the north-south axis.  By contrast, cattle grazing within 50 meters of high-voltage overhead power lines showed no preferred body alignment.  The exception was when the power lines ran east to west. In that case, the cattle tended to align along the direction of the power lines.
