Reduce Arthritis Pain
Bottom Line reports on 5 Holistic Ways to reduce arthritis pain without painkillers. If you find that you are currently on painkillers and you are concerned about the side effects, here are some holistic alternatives:
As always, check with your health care team before making changes.
1. Drink 1-2 cups of green or black tea every day. Polyphenols-compounds found in tea can suppress the expression of a key gene involved with inflammation.
2. Boost your intake of Vitamins C and D. Studies show that vitamin C may slow the loss of cartilage, while a shortage of vitamin D has been shown to speed the progression of osteoarthritis. Take 500 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C and 400 IUs of vitamin D daily.
3. Willow Bark/Boswellia. A study showed that taking these 2 herbs is just as effective as taking a drug like Motrin®. Take 240 mg of willow bark and 1,000 mg of boswellia per day.
4. Eat Grapes. Grapeskins contain resveratrol, a natural compound that acts as a COX-2 inhibitor. The COX-2 enzyme is what produces inflammation at the site of pain or injury. Resveratrol acts as an inhibitor and an antioxidant. Eat one cup of white or red grapes or drink wine! (I don't recommend fruit juices).
5. Therapeutic Taping. Wrapping tape around a join to realign, support and take the pressure off has great benefits for arthritis sufferers. An Australian study showed that the benefits of taping were comparable with those achieved by drug treatments and lasted even after the taping stopped! Please have a physical therapist or experienced doctor show you or a family member how to properly tape-it must be done correctly to be effective.
Linen for Healthy Sleeping
If you find that you just don't sleep well, especially in the summer heat, consider linen. A study at the University of Milan found that you fall asleep faster, sleep deeper, and wake up in a better mood after sleeping on linen! Linen is one of the most durable fabrics in the world. Linen pulls moisture away for the skin while allowing fresh air to circulate. Linen is a hollow fiber meaning that it won't fade and it has a natural luster. Linen is naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial. Linen is machine washable and becomes softer with every wash. www.cuddledown.com is a great source for beautiful Italian sheets.
Giving & Tithing can Heal you
One of my favorite books from Dr. Catherine Ponder is The Dynamic Law of Healing. Here are some of her teachings: If you are in ill health, you have unwittingly cheated yourself in some way. The basic law of life is that you must first give before you can have or receive. One authority has estimated that 80% of the people in a hospital or under a physician's care are people who do not know how to give. Also, people who do not know how to give are also people who do not know how to receive. There is a definite connection between illness and poverty. The poor get sick more frequently than the rich. People with health problems are people out of balance. They may have been trying to get more out of life that they are willing to give. They may have been trying to get something for nothing, and are now paying the high price of ill health. Remember that you place your faith where you place your money. Your faith is where you are giving. If you cannot afford to give to God/Goddess in appreciation as the Source of your health, then you have no faith. Sometimes when folks say that they are tithing to God's work, yet still have health problems, there is another reason: they are giving to God's work at one point, but are receiving spiritual help at another point. Often a person tithes to a certain church or religious organization, but is receiving help from a counselor, practitioner, or minister and has not given willingly in appreciation. This blocks the channel to answered prayer. Gratitude takes 3 forms: a feeling in the heart, an expression in words, and a giving in return. Perhaps you say, I do not give money to those who spiritually inspire me, but I do show my appreciation with gifts. Would you take your doctor or lawyer a gift instead of paying him/her properly for services rendered? Your counselor has to eat and pay taxes too!
Catherine also states that careless giving restricts your good and that your attitude is as important as the gift. Just as you pay a doctor upon completion of an office call, before there is any way of knowing whether the treatment has healed you-in like manner, you should give payment to a spiritual counselor or teacher when you ask for help, before you know whether the treatment has helped you.
